Since the blade's rotation is automatically self-sustaining in flight, the typical fixed-wing stall/spin accident is eliminated entirely. The pilot can maintain complete control of these craft (and all autogyros) down to and including zero mph. In this situation (zero airspeed), the aircraft will descend vertically at about the same rate as a conventional parachute. To resume normal forward flight, the stick back-pressure is released and the nose drops to regain desired speed. (A zero airspeed, vertical landing is survivable for the occupant but not for the aircraft.)
In an emergency, these machines can be landed in just about any spot large enough to contain the rotor disc. Touch-down speed is normally 5-15 mph. With any headwind the landing roll is reduced to zero while normal, no-wind rollout rarely exceeds 20 feet.
